When Sorolla painted 'Niña en mar plateado,' in 1909, it was amongst the most luminous and freely handled works he had produced. In 1906, the newspaper 'La Nación' had written: 'Sorolla is one of the glories of Valencia...one of the glories of modern Spain.'

'Beach at Biarritz,' was painted in 1906 when Sorolla’s style had fully matured; this energetic, atmospheric and fluid sketch ('apuntes') renders the reflections, movement and intense colours of light and water; a painting which has all the hallmarks of his most spontaneous work.

'The Pool in Panshanger Park,' shows Spencer Gore's subtlety in creating a strong landscape out of so few colours. This work from 1909 was painted near Garth House, Hertingfordbury in Hertfordshire where Gore's mother had moved five years previously.
