If the tip of the main stem is lost, auxin is no longer produced by it and side branches are allowed to grow upwards. They then compete until one takes control as the new lead and begins to suppress the others (again, through auxin production). This allows the tree to resume upward growth, as before
Show PostGreat question. This is what's called apical dominance - where the main stem is allowed to grow upwards and side branch growth is suppressed. This is important for trees to grow tall (and not like bushes) and happens through release of a hormone called auxin by the tip of the main stem.
