It's a weird, modern(ish) phenomenon where anyone from a semi-rural area adopts a southern sounding drawl. I'd guess it's related to the explosion of pop country over the last 20 years or so. Guy in my platoon was from some little town outside Buffalo NY and you'd think he was from Arkansas.

I will say, speaking as somebody who has at different times fit into all three dweeb categories, the intersection is nothing but trouble, especially the people in the intersection who are interested in but bad at all three.
