Can I suggest using a large stipling brush if you're trying slapchop on a model with large areas. I've used it on a small scale to nice effect.

I love the idea of an area where magic doesn't work very well because ancient wizards overused it or in some other way broke the magic there. It's a great allegory for over harvesting/farming, using fossil fuels, tracking, etc
