I despair at the Govt keep making things illegal that are a) already illegal b) not a problem. Sexually assaulting a person in a public toilet was already illegal. Murdering someone with a bicycle was already illegal. As if making things crimes will stop them as opposed to just enforcing them!

This is one of an odd class of facts, which are hard to deny (I mean, do *you* know how long you'd get if you were caught up a ladder carrying a crowbar?) but equally hard to keep hold of, because they run counter to deep-seated assumptions (e.g. that governments can Do Something about Crime).

Nobody knows what the sentence for any particular criminal offence is, so changing sentences (e.g. by making them "tougher") has vanishingly little chance of affecting anyone's behaviour.
