Re the discourse around gatekeeping and its necessity: I once went to residential rehab for drug addiction. When I left, I got accommodation in a (government funded, or at least overseen) place that required you to go to 12-step meetings (no other sort) as a condition of living there.

So I started going to NA meetings. I can't say I found them particularly helpful, and I did NOT like the idea that I should hang around other "addicts" for support my whole life. But what really turned me off it was when an attendee was selling drugs there, known by those running the group.

I remember informally complaining to one of the senior members and being told "we can't judge people". Um. Yes, you can. You can defend your fucking space from predators, actually. It's ok to judge them!
