i’m at a conference full of drug and alcohol counselors and feeling uncharacteristically optimistic today. these folks sit with people on their worst days and have stories and stories of people recovering. one speaker just said “systems can recover too” and i think, maybe, there’s a path there.

in fact, there've been times i took art criticism i strongly disagreed with and/or DID find a bit too mean more seriously BECAUSE fans of the criticized work were losing their shit in an immature, undignified way that didn't even meaningfully address the criticism.

i hope people who throw tantrums over criticism of art they like understand that doing this makes them look like middle schoolers, and will never have the effect of making anyone else turn around and go "hey, wait, maybe that critic was Too Mean to [work] after all!"
