You only get 3-5% but FDIC insured over terms from 6 mo to 5 years. Any bank can issue them. Companies like Fidelity, Vanguard and Schwab have them also. You can make more by investing in mutual funds but you need to keep an eye on them. With CDs you just invest and forget until close to maturity.
