These are great points. I do get bothered by some of the “happy days” crowd who seem to minimize how tough it is for a lot of people. Our perception of the economy is almost always a mixture of our bank account balance and a comparison of how things used to be.

If you're talking about $30K over a person's lifetime it might not seem like much, but $30K at once or over a short time... that's "pay off debt" money. That's "down payment on a house" money. That's "I can leave my abusive spouse" money.

We pay enough that these people should be able to do their fucking jobs. The time spent dealing with the private sector bureaucracy is a cost to people that never gets captured.
