If an engineering degree is free but you pay full tuition to study literature then a humanities degree of any kind becomes something only accessible to the rich because no working class person in their right mind would do it. This turns the arts into a nepotism factory far worse than even today.

I think it's a manifold problem. Market consolidation has limited the number of viable paths in the economy and distorted the value of labor. Not everyone should go to college, nor should they need to to receive dignity, but that's become the expectation. We need a better vocational system.

Arguably, college had already lost that. It's one of the reasons people are becoming so restless; college is no longer a guarantee of a better life. Not that it was before, but it's become even starker over the past couple of decades.

We need to look at all different solutions to help folks keep a roof over their heads. I had the opportunity to meet with the @cityofvancouver.bsky.social and folks who rely on the Safe RV Park Program to understand what’s working and what’s not.
