Hear us out: The richest person in the world should not be allowed to dump hundreds of millions to affect the midterm elections. This is not a radical idea. We need campaign finance reform.
Show PostIt’s the cowardice that gets me. Every damn time.
Show PostAnd as I show in a paper under review (which I hope is the makings of a book), voting-related burdens that steer people to longer Election Day lines that further widen the health and disability divides in political participation and, in turn, representation and policy responsiveness.
Show PostWe should absolutely foster high turnout elections. But if we don’t also build capacity and inclusivity in election administration, burden will make it difficult to exercise a constitutional right, or may even prevent the exercise of that right. Broadening mail voting and early voting is imperative.
Show PostThis is the exact point that I made on a voting rights panel at Pitt Law today. Some see long lines to vote that wrap around several blocks and say “this is what democracy looks like.” But a healthy democracy wouldn’t create stringent election rules that fuel a time tax and other burdens to vote.
