The obvious answer is that we solve valuing human and animal life before we create artificial life. But I don't think that is what will happen so we'll end up having this debate about machine consciousness while millions die from war/disease/poverty and countless species go extinct. It sucks.

And there's a whole host of ethical issues if we do eventually get there and create artificial consciousness. I don't think society has adequate frameworks that value human and animal life enough for us to even adequately address this issue. We tolerate so much mass death and suffering.

I don't think LLMs or current tech is anywhere close but I do think we eventually create something that approximates consciousness/sentience. At a certain point, a simulacrum is close enough that it functionally stops mattering that it is a simulation.

Serious question. What are people's thoughts on AI _ever_ being conscious. Assuming LLMs and current tech are nowhere near close, do you believe that machines could ever gain consciousness or sentience? Is it metaphysically impossible and is human/animal consciousness unique and not reproducible?
