We need to focus less on affordability and much more on *precarity*. People can be doing just fine, for now, while living with the knowledge that it could all come crashing down without warning. This is what the rosy stats consistently gloss over.

It hardly matters whether the bloodless quants think consumers are “lying” or think they are merely stupid. The quants fail to grasp that the data reflects the extreme precariousness of a seemingly “comfortable” American life. Job security, housing security? Things of the past for so many.

For the life of me I will never understand how, “the people are just lying!” is considered a serious position whereas, “maybe they aren’t let’s see” isn’t. Maybe AI can fix this.

"just ask an LLM when the semester ends instead" mate this is the kind of factual information LLMs routinely screw up, and it's important to be 100% sure what dates are what, and this is a problem best solved by basic web design, not by neural nets deciphering crappy web design
