Show PostI suppose it was a kind of immigration fraud. Reminds us that the cool retrospective view of history can turn what looked like fraud at the time into something immensely humane and personal. And it places a moral responsibility on me to pass on some of that humanity to present-day migrants. (3/3)
Show PostThe letter hailed them as 'dear cousins' and asked them to be sure to write when they knew they were able to leave (UK for my father, Italy for my grandparents and aunt) so they could meet them at the docks in New York. I knew this story vaguely but now I know exactly who they were. (2/3)
Show PostGoing through some of my father's papers I came across - what in my professional life I'd tout as a great archival discovery - a letter from the (unrelated, and I think not Jewish) Mandlers who sponsored my father's and his family's visas to the US in 1939, out of the goodness of their hearts.
