Again - this is not nothing! It's significant and real! But I think people aren't really being entirely honest with themselves in how we talk about this, because the need to express ressentiment has eclipsed practical discussions of economic policy.

Yes. And that specific way for it to change your life also involves, fundamentally, NOT spending it on "covering my debts." 30k can give you a degree of a fresh start. It can help you get breathing room. But people I think overestimate its long term value, significant though it may be.

What could possibly make a 30-to-50k windfall life-changing, in the long run, is having the leisure to put all of it in a low-risk investment account. But that gets into "employing a financial planner" territory, which on here is also very gauche to talk about.
