Because “they” has already been used as a third person single pronoun long enough that we don’t need to shoehorn a new word into the lexicon. We just have to stop pretending “they” isn’t perfectly suitable.

I might get some backlash for this, but I’ve seen plenty of local small businesses that supported MAGA and Trump, believing he would stand up for the little guy and help them out, like with the Covid relief funds. Unfortunately, many of those businesses ended up cheating the public.
