Folks who live in particularly trans-oppressive states are utterly terrified of staying under the status quo right now. This is much like 2008, where cis gay rights were dismissed as unimportant by candidates from both major parties, but far more intense in the real-world negative effects.

In 2008, Democrats gained a stronger Congressional majority and took back the Presidency, but those branches of government frankly did very little for cis gay people. It took winning court decisions to carve out more protection in law at a national level, and those decisions are *fragile.*
