oh i literally went to a talk about this! the guy giving the talk called such places "new bohemias" and had a part where he speculated where the next cultural centers might be, geographically, based on cheap rent and empty industrial buildings!

One time I stayed in this house in South Lawndale that was haunted and had scratch marks on the walls and terrible insulation and holes in the wall, but it was $350 a month and I had my own private bathroom.

Man, one time I had a $250 apartment in Brighton Park that was basically a closet. One of my roommates was genuinely malefic, but I made friends with a decadent Morelian aristocrat and went to the thrift store three times a week.
