I suspect this is a literary conceit I'll often return to as a writer in the years ahead: the idea that Trump perceives himself as lord of a 13th century duchy rather than a 21st century democracy. That he'd blithely exempt himself from an ethics pledge is one of many indications he aims to be King.

I've always thought homophobia was an extreme form of misogyny. The male homophob hates being objectified, thinking it makes him less masculine. The female homophob hates the gay male because he becomes compition for "her man". Both are irrational. Not sure if I am right, just a thought.
