We should espouse safer, stronger, more reliable principles, ones that survive contact with the truth: “We have an obligation to protect the very needy and as a fabulously prosperous society with great wealth to share, we are more than able to do so.”

We are a rich nation, most of us are middle class. There is a suffering minority and we can afford to help them.
