Just attend [insert any Catholic academic gathering here] and you can see the performance in tension with the tasks. Honestly one time the performance was so intense I went home early. "Fuck it, I drove here," I said to myself, checked out of the hotel, went home. lol.

Man I love it when students who will never, ever be theology majors stop by my office just to bother me about whether Supergirl was a good movie and how excited we should be about GTA VI. Undergrads are the best.

This isn't to say that the realization of personal value via cultural values has no social or vital pay-offs--Lonergan calls persons "originating values" bc they generate other goods--but if you get your scale out of order, this makes the whole scheme progressively less effective over time.

Lonergan's scale of values clarifies the moral confusion at work: education is a cultural value ordered foremost to the realization of personal value. The student loan system (& the universities themselves) are a social value ordered to the realization of both. We're mostly backwards on this.
