East Germany had basically one trade union, controlled by the government, and if you left it, you lost your health insurance. It's not surprising that East German workers were less able to negotiate for better working conditions
Show PostThis excerpt is exactly what turned me off the book (Beyond The Wall), because it's straightforwardly untrue! Working hours in the East were longer than in the West! Fewer holidays - Saturdays were workdays until 1967 - and longer shifts (40 hour week arrived in West in 1965, but 1977 in East).
