I can't explain why but I have a feeling spray paint might not cover/nullify the stickiness of the masking tape very well -- I've never tried it though! I'd be a little more optimistic about a thick coating of acrylic paint.

With my method, before paper mache I covered the eye with shipping tape (the shiny plastic stuff), and that acts as a release agent so you can remove all of the inside materials, including the tape. I've never done a mask that ended up with exposed masking tape inside, but I think it'll be fine!
