Someone was asking the point of chess for a kid. Obviously enjoyment is its own goal. But I can't say I dislike the Kid having a hobby that requires sitting and concentrating on one thing for 1-2 hours each time, and 7-8 hours in a day with no computer. There are so few opportunities to do that.

The other thing I find very salutary about chess is that you literally can't be that good at it. The only result of being good (which he is) is that you run into stronger players, and if you beat them, you run into even stronger players, and at some point there are unbeatable players.
