As someone else in the thread noted, other versions of software can and often do get you 98% of the way there, in terms of features/interoperability, but it turns out that remaining 2% is often mission critical, and that's where Adobe/Microsoft, etc get you if you are a working professional.
Show PostSo, as an example, as a professional author I can initially write in whatever program I like, but when it comes to editing documents come back from my editor/publisher, I need to have Word, otherwise I may have compatibility issues. I end up mostly writing in Word anyway. It's industry standard.
