So, with the Dist Ct, 9th Circuit and SCOTUS all denying stays on Judge Silver's Order to appoint Annette Chambers-Smith as receiver while the appeal is pending, her appt becomes effective near the end of this month. Oral argument in the 9th Cir will be on Dec. 7.

It occurs to me that the tendency towards medicalizing executions is not for the benefit of the person being executed. It's for us -- to give it an appearance of being humane, even as it makes it far less so. It's so we don't have to be made uncomfortable by the sight of our own lust for blood.

What I hate is how we as a society have continuously tried to hide the barbarism behind questionable claims of mercy. Moving from firing squad to gallows to electric chair to gas to this. It's not mercy for the condemned; it's mercy for us, making it easier to stomach and hand wave away.
