Groceries are the one place in my monthly budget that I feel I can somewhat control, so that's where I focus a lot of effort. The ducks will always need food and the electricity bill has to get paid, but I can learn to cook more lentil dishes, you know?

The cost of everything has gone up so much that salaries haven't even come close to adjusting for it. Most people getting yearly standard raises are actively being paid LESS and LESS every year. We are eating so much rice. So. Much. Rice.

Was very proud of myself for dumping half a royalty check into savings, but this is not discipline like avocado toast people would tell you. It's making enough money that all your basic needs are already taken care of when you get a check, instead of being so far in hole every check goes in the hole

Much like "just eat less to lose weight" the modern "just spend less money to save money" advice only works if your baseline genetic or economic state is at a certain level. Making assumptions about people's starting states is why "it's so easy!" advice so often feels out of touch.
