As a foreign spectator, I can only say the reactions reveal a lot of western thought. I understand the disengagement from both users and collegues, but many responses are frightening parasocial. He's not "our" friend. Furthermore, people seem to forget about change and how private life works.

This news came out. It's bad no matter how you slice it. Absolutely. You've also taken immediate accountability and action back then and right now, and that's good. Better than denying and shoving it under the rug forever. People don't advertise their worst moment before taking on a job or career.
