I’ve always had the impression that people of the time weren’t aware the Roman empire was disintegrating, but being in the middle of our own disintegrating empire, I wonder if there wasn’t lots of the same kind of discussion we have.

Their culture was one of storytelling and gathering for speeches, holding public forums, etc. so I would bet that they knew things weren't going well and spent a lot of time talking about it together.
