This is grotesque for the reasons Joel identifies and I clicked through to see what is there. Something to note for academic types: there is a page-view counter that signals to me a tension between needing to be aware of what is happening and letting outrage be the driver of traffic.

I am once again bemused by this- aren't the differences and continuities better explained by geography than cultural traditions? The Danish sites used as a comparison are very coastal, adjacent to some of the richest inshore fisheries in the world, but the English sites are at least a day inland.
