This abdication of its historic position is an opportunity for other states (not only Europe on Ukraine but also, e.g., Arab states on Palestine) to step up and make tough choices about how to move forward, given that there are not any obviously good or easy answers. 2/

A silver lining of the current mess in the US is that it is effectively shifting policymaking to other states—pushing _them_ to propose solutions to the world’s ills, instead of positioning itself as the necessary or most competent “leader” (which it obviously is not). 1/
