I don’t think this is true: ATL and candidate votes are recorded, and the AEC records the split. Most voters go ATL.

Oh I see. Fair. But you can still make the assumption that a voter who goes ATL is supporting the ticket list *on the basis they’re on that ticket*, above any individual appeal they might have, or else they would have voted BTL.

No, it's going to be close, but Tim will most likely crawl across the line. This is not the result I'd prefer, but I can either respect it, or go all conspiracy theory and claim that the AEC is either complicit or broken. I am an Australian, I don't trust our politicians, but I do trust the AEC.
