Terrific thread that builds a response to one of the harder questions with the anti-AI stance: Why *not* use AI to write if you're already an expert? The answer here is that our contribution as thinkers, writers, researchers is not just what we've done, but what we *can* do in the future -->
Show PostIt is not in fact our generation’s job to be the last group of physicists who know how to do things, you fucking dodos. We don’t just hire students to make our research go. We hire them to pass on knowledge and secure humanity’s ancestral inheritance.
Show PostMore broadly I’ve heard a variety of comments from physicists (not the blogger) that are along the lines of: “we don’t even need students anymore” and “what’s the point of hiring students anymore” and it’s really hard not to reply “it’s our job to train the next generation you stupid, selfish fuck”
Show PostThere is absolutely no point to us doing science if people aren’t at the center of the scientific story. And in the case of particle physics and cosmology, there is no argument that we need the intervention of GenAI to speed things up. None. At all. The universe will be fine if we don’t go faster.
Show PostHe actually points out that someone could just start editing in the style of some famous scientist. And that will be the shortcut that students will go to if we normalize this. And how drab. Eventually it‘s just a copy of a copy of a copy. Where is the human in it? This is *our* science.
