Because modern plantation banana cultivars for import to the US didn't exist until 1870 so there wouldn't have been any bananas in the city at the time of the film :-D

Gladiator (2000) had fresh tomatoes piled on outdoor market stalls in a movie about 180 CE in Rome. Tomatoes are a New World crop and didn’t show up in Italy until 1300 years later. The Roman cavalry was also shown using stirrups which is also wrong.
