52 years ago today on October 21,1974 Radio City (Liverpool) opened, the first 24-hour station in the UK outside London. I made my debut in that opening week, just out of my teens, covering non-league football, becoming its politics editor in the 1980s before moving to Westminster for 34 years.

I love 4 Extra. It's my favourite radio station. I love how it flows as a linear station. I love how it schedules programmes I'd otherwise never have heard. It's my go-to escape. I'm very sad to read that it is to close.
