There was an interesting anti-car undercurrent to some early 20th century conservatism. IIRC there’s a Waugh bit where he complains cars kill the old village market etc.

That's interesting since I've read about big merchants in other cities (like LA) as early as the thirties seeing lack of parking as a crisis I wonder if the sticking point here was public vs private, like the person who said that wanted more private garages

thought the recurring theme of suburban express buses was interesting. I’ve read here in portland that when rose city transit started operating express bus services it was controversial because the suburban transit operators felt like RCT was cannibalizing their ridership
