@ligo-sci-collab.bsky.social@ligo-sci-collab.bsky.social → @ligo.orgJust gonna take that theoretical $25 mil and give @ligo.org a boost with it 😃
Show PostCongrats to our materials team & @anff.org.au: 3 years in the lab developing & applying the most perfect coatings to 2 beamsplitters for @ligo.org to help detect gravitational waves with greater sensitivity than ever before physics.anu.edu.au/news_events/... @aip.org.au @scienceanu.bsky.social
Show PostI think optical/NIR astronomy could also be interested in such coatings. We paid a lot of money for many-layer coatings of the #Euclid near-infrared filters, and still there was measurable inhomogeneity. I think the company we used already pushed commercial gear to its limits.
Show PostSome really nice work going on at @scienceanu.bsky.social @ozgrav.bsky.social that will go towards upgrading the huge gravitational-wave detectors at @ligo.org The researchers have had to coat the glass across the full beam splitters to within an uncertainty of .... *A FEW ATOMS* 🤯🤯🤯 🔭🧪
