I've heard that when you call tech support and they tell you to unplug a (non-power) wire and plug it back in that this is mostly a way to make sure it's plugged in at all without sounding condescending.
Show PostLike I cannot emphasize enough how much the average person cannot do this, my mom who I love dearly found her mail on her computer (she now uses her phone as of three years ago) by typing "gmail" into google search and clicking on the top link and before that it was typing "yahoo mail"
