I think it's lovely when people keep homes in the family, btw! Don't sell your house if you don't want to! Choose not to maintain it if you don't want to! I just think it's ALSO lovely when other families get to have homes too.

There is a strong case to make for downsizing your house when it is clearly too large for you and using the proceeds of the sale to buy a smaller house AND keep the difference in your savings. But if you're going to do absolutely no maintenance, let alone improvements, for 30 years...

It's so interesting (/s) to see boomers talking about their houses as 'their only savings' and then refusing to maintain them and being shocked when they try to sell them at truly outrageous prices that no one will pay because they don't want to pay $800k AND do $200k in repairs to be livable.
