State DOTs control most of the deadliest city streets (including this one in Memphis), but they won’t fix them bc they don’t want to constrain speed or vehicle throughput. The funding issue is bogus IMO. State DOTs always find $$ for favored roadway expansions. Urban safety just isn’t a priority.

Recently visited Pittsburgh where I grew up. Upon returning I found myself thinking that I wouldn’t need a car if I lived there. Neighborhoods are close together and excellent public transportation. Also no sprawl even getting to the suburbs is easy.

This is very true. At the state level also. Take Oregon, which has been in Dem control for decades. Yet the OR DOT is trying to ram through enormous freeway expansion projects while at the same time slashing transit and slow-walking every form of complete streets reforms.
