He'll assist you inasmuch as a ranger's companion would, and no more. He's basically your driver's ed instructor. Also he wears teeny tiny spectacles, and deep down really cares about you. Imagine that'll get tough for him the deadlier the adventure gets!

Anyway, the companion's a high lvl wizard ostrich from a magic academy. He travels with you, a lowly ranger, cause you're training to become a protector of novice mages. So yes, he could cast a 9th lvl Meteor to help you, but he's here to observe *your* aptitude, not display his own magical mastery.

That 2024 capstone ability is really insulting. Making most Ranger spells concentration, but requiring Hunters Mark to need concentration denies you your entire spell pool. If the class is now just the Hunters Mark class, why are there so many limitations and such a low ceiling on Hunters Mark?!
