oh interesting. i don’t understand how a work cannot have goals and intentions: it’s made by someone for some reason. even the most escapist media has a personal-political motive to it. interpretation simply reads the tea leaves or dilutes intent to me

i don’t think anything is above criticism, but i do think the work itself has innate intentions, right? the work defines itself and then gets situated into larger context, and it’s our job as critics (and readers, truthfully) to interpret all this and explain how it lands with us.

a big distinction for me is are you engaging with the work poorly, as in without skill, or are you engaging with the work in a disrespectful manner against its terms because you want it to be something it isn’t. are you not good or are you just not meeting the work where it is?
