As someone who likes to make random species at times - I just like to keep things open to avoid any aformentioned headaches/issues & overall encourage creativity.

I've seen a lot of cool concepts inevitably lose any kind of audience if the species is closed, while on the other end of the spectrum you may have a partially open species with some special/closed traits that people will use anyway. It seems like a headache to deal with if the species gets popular.

I am pro open species. Always. Forever. No gatekeeping. No exclusitivity club mentality. No worrying about canon lore, traits, or this-and-that. Play with designs. Mutate it. Elevate it. Give credit where credit is due, and most of all - create for the sake of having fun!
