Even the appearance will be further corrosive to public trust. Say they donate to someone voting with principle on a bill that happens (however hard it may be to imagine) to align with corporate interests. for the rest of that legislator‘s career that vote & donation is a gift to their opposition.

This is exactly my parents: they moved us across the country because my dad didn’t get along with anyone. I saw extended family once a year? Then they were appalled when I set boundaries with them.

This is one of the things that the internet ruined: it used to be fairly easy to distance yourself from your family. Move across the country. Call infrequently. Send Christmas cards if that. See each other once a decade at funerals. It wouldn't become a think piece .
