A reference in a 1920s-set novel to newspaper crosswords in 1917, and (by the same author!) a character in a 1923-set book doing The Times crossword. As any fule kno, the crossword itself dates from 1923, and The Times only got one in 1930. Frankly pathetic. * Me. It was me. I'm so sorry.
