Back then one big game success could fund multiple game projects, and maybe some of those would be a moderate to big success. Now it just funds the next game in the series with no guarantee it will be enough to make the one after that.

I just don't think video games work at the scale big companies want it to work at. They keep on insisting on making big games with big returns and that almost never happens. Things seemed to work a lot better when they were making a bunch of smaller things that occasionally made it big.
