Dutati are mainly worn for festivals and dances now, but used to be worn as everyday clothing of the islanders - unlike hanaori which were fancier/more formal. In Dunan (the Yonaguni language), dūchi means “four things”, so the name for Dutati comes from du (four bits of cloth) and tati (sewing).
