Why do some animals have many social partners while others invest in a few strong relationships? Our new @royalsocietypublishing.org paper suggests the answer may be: it depends on the weather ☀️🌧️ 🐑 tinyurl.com/mry3mtpf

In the wild, flight has no fixed cost. In the right atmospheric conditions, large soaring birds like the Andean condor fly as cheaply as a fish of the same mass swims. In adverse conditions, flapping flight can be almost as costly as running.

Very excited to share our new paper, out now in Science. 17 years of biologging and radar data on 50 species of free-flying birds and bats revise the classic ranking of locomotion costs 🧵 doi.org/10.1126/scie... @mpi-animalbehav.bsky.social @swanseauni.bsky.social @science.org 🎥 ©Bruno Osorio

Same weight, different energy bill. An Andean condor uses 79% less energy per kilometer than a trumpeter swan, even though both weigh roughly the same. Why? Find out in a new study in Science, which rewrites the costs of flight for wild birds and bats: doi.org/10.1126/scie... 1/3

Stats explorations w/ Claude remind me of "a 4-wheel drive vehicle just gets you stuck in deeper mud". Going down rabbit holes I would previously have avoided ... surprisingly (to me) small/complicated differences between LRT & Wald for coverage/type-1 error ... bbolker.github.io/bbmisc/wald_...
