I'd rather see a good decomp/recomp with lots of modding options than a realistic UE5 remake with full-size models. The chibi models are part of the unique charm!

This foggy interpretation of the mist seems valid on paper and quite obvious, but it doesn't look right somehow. Maybe I'm too used to the original and its wispy-thin sprites representing mist. I don't want these environments obscured in N64-style fog.

I'm curious how this is being made. If this is someone's honest, human, elbow-grease effort, more power to 'em and I don't want to make fun. It'd take me a lot of work to make something that looks like this does.
