I would go a step further and say that you do absolutely owe that absurd amount of money in that moment, and if you drop the ball on navigating the bureaucracy you *will* be expected to pay it. It is real debt in every sense of the word, even if you have an expectation of resolving it differently.

Gonna have to disagree on this one. Being *told* you have $500k in debt, having to fight for it to be acknowledged as an error, *is* the harm. The psychological damage that can do, on top of the stresses of being a new parent, can’t be overstated

i'm trying not to be a smug canadian here but you do realise that every single aspect of this story is an indictment of your terrible system, right? paying $30k to have a child is a travesty, temporarily thinking you might have $500k of debt is a travesty, so is quibbling over how that story is told
